It started with a print. A PlayStation ad: a young soldier sitting on a staircase, medals on his chest, looking far away. “PLAYSTATION YOUNG VETERAN”
I wanted to make the film behind that ad.
Sixty seconds, black and white, no dialogue, just a voice over.
A fourteen-year-old arrives at the front. He's terrified, and he has no idea where he is. Then someone puts a rifle in his hands, and the fear goes. He doesn't see a war anymore. He sees a game. So he plays. He dies in the mud, among his friends, in a forest, a trench, the snow, by a fire in the dark. And every time he opens his eyes again, he's more alive than before. Every death makes him stronger, and makes him want to go back. Then he's back on the steps. It was never a real war. He just played it so hard he came out a veteran.
The original print — the creative starting point for the film.
